Michael Ian Cummings (US)

"intimate solo project of Skaters frontman"

For fans of: Kevin Morby / Courtney Barnett / His Golden Messenger

Bio provided by artist:
Michael Ian Cummings released his debut full-length solo album, Godzilla, in February 2026. The record’s 11 tracks serve as a natural follow-up to his 2023 EP Oldest Troubles, while marking a clear step forward. Recorded over four days with everything tracked live in the room, it is self-released entirely on his own terms and free of any label involvement. The Big Takeover noted that Cummings went into the record with a more deliberate writing process than his previous solo work, setting out to give the album a strong and consistent identity both lyrically and sonically. The album received radio support in its first weeks of release. The Big TakeoverThe Big Takeover

Cummings and Alex Orange Drink — known for his work with the So So Glos and as a member of Bright Eyes’ live band — have also launched an intimate concert series called Sunday Sessions at Victoria!, Cummings’ bar on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The inaugural edition, covered by Brooklyn Vegan, featured performances by Alex Orange Drink, Cummings, Maya Luz, and Rob Mastrianni, and drew a surprise appearance from Conor Oberst, who joined in on several songs the night after Bright Eyes played Forest Hills Stadium. The series is an ongoing, songwriter-focused gathering designed to give artists a space to play deep cuts, try out new material, and connect with an audience in an informal setting. Cummings co-founded Skaters in New York City in 2012 alongside drummer Noah Rubin and English guitarist Josh Hubbard. Within months of forming and releasing a self-produced EP, the band signed to Warner Brothers Records, toured internationally, and received critical acclaim from outlets including NME and the New York Times. Their debut album, Manhattan, was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village and released in 2014. The band later parted ways with Warner Bros. and independently released a second album, Rock and Roll Bye Bye, in 2017. Wikipedia + 2

Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Cummings began his career as a founding member of The Dead Trees, formed in 2006. Albert Hammond Jr. of the Strokes heard their debut EP and brought the band out to support him on two U.S. tours. The Dead Trees released two albums and toured with artists including MGMT before dissolving. During this period Cummings also worked as a touring guitarist for acts including The Cribs and Adam Green.
